ASP version 7.5.1 Getting the generic 404 message when an item doesn't exist or is not available on search and products.asp. Can't make webconfig show details. Funny thing, when the webconfig file is present, everything operates normally, but no details on the error.

ServeLink response:
...In the case of a HTTP 404 response there isn't anything extra we can add, there's no further error message that can be displayed as there isn't an error as such. The resource you requested simply cannot be found and that's all we know...
It's just odd that without the web.config file it displays as the old generic 404 page rather than the beautiful page filled with suggestions as to next steps on the custom page that displays when web.config is left on the site.

Not really odd. web.config tells the site where your custom 404 page is located; if you remove that then, without being directed to the location of the custom page, all the system can really do is display a default 404 page together with a HTTP 404 response code. Sounds like that's what you are seeing Peter Professional ecommerce web hosting services Shared hosting Windows & Linux | Dedicated servers | Domains | SSL Ecommerce Templates specialists since 2003 https://servelink.com

Hi Peter, Thing is, there's nothing in the web.config file but the error details instructions.

So what are you expecting to happen then? You won't get a custom 404 page to display, if that's what you are trying to do, unless web.config knows the location of that custom file (that's the default setup that we provide). Detailed error messages on screen are not really a great idea, but you do need an actual script error to occur before you will see anything, a 404 isn't going to do that. Is there a sample web.config file that can help with this?

If you switch Hosting & DNS >> Hosting Settings >> Custom Error Documents back on again the system will rewrite the default web.config file which will get your custom error document displaying again. I think that's what you are looking for.
