Ecommerce Templates Newsletter May 2018

Welcome to the May 2018 Ecommerce Templates newsletter

Welcome to the May edition of the Ecommerce Templates Newsletter where we bring exciting news of the latest ECT release, 6.9.2 and its features, including the GDPR related tweaks we have incorporated.

Extensionless URLs

Extensionless URLs offer search engine friendly clean URL formatting. It means that you don't have to worry about adding a file extension like .asp,.php, .html or whatever to your pages.

In 6.9.2 you can now display these new URL formats on pages such as the cart so a new cart URL would be like www.yourstoreurl.com/cart/ - and you can choose to show that final trailing slash or not, whatever you think looks and works best for your store.

On a related note the product detail page now will throw a 301 and forward users to the correct page when the case is incorrect of an SEO URL, or if you have defined a static URL but the non static URL has been used instead.

GDPR

You have probably been bombarded with emails in the last few days and weeks asking you if you want to continue receiving emails from the companies involved. At ECT we've always employed a double opt in system so anybody on our mailing list has effectively agreed twice to continue receiving news of updates and features. We have also always offered an unsubscribe link if you want to change your mind at any time - you'll find that at the bottom of this and every newsletter.

On the GDPR theme, in version 6.9.2 we added the possibility of offering a drop down choice on checkout so customers are prompted to opt in or opt out of receiving your newsletters.

We also removed the "Remember Me" feature from the checkout and replaced it with an optional Create Account button. This is a much more compliant method for customers who want to have their details registered with your store.

If you require customers to agree to your terms and conditions on checkout, this can now be displayed as an inline pop-up in keeping with the look and feel of the rest of the store. All you need to do is go to the content region admin page and set up a new region called "termsandconditions", enter your terms there and the system will recognize the region and display it on checkout if you have the the terms and conditions parameter set in vsadmin/includes.asp / includes.php.

Like many companies in response to GDPR we have "beefed up" our privacy and terms and conditions statements. If you would like to read the changes, they are available here.
