I am also interested in this. I was told by PayPal that it is possible via PayPal Payments Standard. In other words, their API can accept the information that the order is for a recurring product or service and the frequency of the billing. In standard PayPal we are NOT allowed to create recurring profile like we can with PayPal Manager. So the shopping cart must tell PayPal if the charge is recurring or not and how often to repeat the charge during the checkout process.
No one is asking the shopping cart to automatically place a new order each month with PayPal. We are asking you to interface with PayPal standard and give them the information that the order being place is a recurring one.
Please let me know if this available or if it could be added. It is very important that we offer the PayPal payment option to avoid additional transaction fees. But almost everything we sell is recurring. And currently the only way to setup a recurring billing with PayPal standard is to send the buyer a link and completely bypass your shopping cart software all together. Thank you
