I have noticed that when our customers are directed to the barclays payments page from our website (epdq payment gateway) that these pages do not seem to be viewing correctly on mobile devices as they appear very small. They are not responsive design or mobile friendly.

I am not sure if they have always been like this but I have asked Barclays and they are not admitting to doing any recent changes even though I am sure in the past they did adjust to correctly fit a small screen and did not require zooming in by the customer.

Can anyone let me know there experience with this please.

Hi

We haven't heard of any reports of problems there (but maybe people just haven't noticed either). We haven't made any recent changes to epdq payments.

I must admit to being surprised that Barclays default template is not mobile friendly. Im sure when a set it up a few years ago and tested it on my mobile it was ok.

I have recently had a lot of incomplete orders from customers trying to buy products on my site when they use a mobile and it does not surprise me as they move from my responsive design website to a non responsive payment page.

Barclays suggest I use there recently developed mobile friendly template.

Here is what they say.
In order to use our static mobile template, you need to transmit the URL of the mobile template page using the following hidden field and value:

<input type="hidden" name="TP" value="PaymentPage_1_iPhone.htm">

You can find more out about it here
https://www.barclaycard.co.uk/business/files/ePDQ_Advanced_Integration_Guide.pdf

Would this work with our setup or need a lot of modification to the code.

Regards
Tom.

Hi Tom

Add this to vsadmin/includes.php

$payprovextraparams14='<input type="hidden" name="TP" value="PaymentPage_1_iPhone.htm">';

and then let us know if you get their mobile template.

An error on the checkout page or on the site in general? What was the error message?

It was on barclays gateway checkout page, it was fine on my side.

It read

An error has occurred; please try again later. If you are the owner or the integrator of this website, please log into the back office to see the details of the error.

Andy,

I have asked Barclays to give me a bit more information about it.

I have asked them if it is provided as a default or would need to first be uploaded and set as a static template and would this be supported on there basic essential package.
Also if the command line was in place to transmit the URL for the iPhone template page using the following hidden field and value <input type="hidden" name="TP" value="PaymentPage_1_iPhone.htm"> how would this work for customers using a desktop pc or tablet.

I will let you know what they say, they are never very fast with responding so it may be a day or two.

Thanks for your help Andy.

Spoke to Barclays today regarding this template and they have told me we would have to make and design this ourselves as they do not provide it.

That would be well beyond my abilities and a lot of work for you guys so I think we have drawn a blank on this one.

I think we shall just have to except Barclays ePDQ payment gateway system used as a basic default setup will not display very well for customers paying on mobile devices unless dynamic templates are created and set up in the Barclays back office system which may be very complicated for most people to do.

I have requested that Barclays look into providing this service as standard so we shall see what happens in the next few weeks / Months.

Regards
Tom.

Hi Tom

Thanks for letting us know. That's very poor from their end - I'm quite shocked to be honest. You'd have thought it would be in their interest to make the checkout flexible.

I agree Andy and have been in dispute with them all week about it as I did not believe what I was hearing either.
Especially when I took a look here at one of their information videos to check, which seems to show it fine for mobiles, take a look and you will see what I mean.
https://www.barclaycard.co.uk/business/accepting-payments/online-payment-solutions

This is why at first I thought it must have been an error on their side that wasn't showing the page correctly for mobiles. It took the first two days for them to grasp the issue and understand what I was talking about. Either that or they were playing stupid (not sure what is worse) Then after that a further few days to admit they do not provide this service.

I then checked in the user guide and they also sent me an email that suggested they had created a mobile template which is then why I contacted you guys to seek advice on how it could be set up. Then when we had difficulty with that I asked Barclays to provide the mobile template to be then told they don't actually provide it and we would need to create it ourselves.

I feel I have been completely misled about this all week and have issued a complaint to them about it. I don't know why I should be surprised as banks have a history of misleading people.

This main issue with Barclays is they have out sourced this platform and so they do not actually have any control or proper understanding of it.

All we want is a mobile friendly payment gateway page, it should not be this hard for them to delivery.

Update on this.

In Barclays defence and putting aside their confusing advice over the basic development of their static mobile template it does seem it is actually available and possible to connect to it.

It is however very basic (just really an enlargement of the standard page) and you can connect to it if set in the customppsend.php file
as :

if(@$ogtemplate=='')$ogtemplate='PaymentPage_1_iPhone.htm';

It's not really suitable when viewed on a desktop pc as the page is now to large. It also takes away the company logo if you have that set to display on the page.

To use this we would really need an interpret of what kind of browser/device is being used. If that was the case, could a flag be put into place to say “if ‘mobile’, include the template parameter, else display the standard values”?

Is this possible.

Thanks for letting us know. It's still a bit of a cop out as it shouldn't be too difficult to make a payment page responsive. I'll move this to the Suggestions Forum so it doesn't get lost here.

Thanks Andy,

I know I agree it is a cop out really, however Barclays don't seem to be the only ones not providing a good payment gateway for mobiles. Worldpay don't seem to have one in place and although Sagepay do theirs is very limited as to what you can do with it and you can't display a company logo on it yet but they do say they hope to develop it further for the future.

Can't really understand why non of them are taking this seriously, I thought using mobiles was top priority these days for these sort of things.

Hi Payless
I think you can add this conditionally then by opening the customppsend.php script in notepad and search for...

if(@$ogtemplate=='')$ogtemplate='';

...and change that to...

if($mobilebrowser)$ogtemplate='PaymentPage_1_iPhone.htm';

Can you try that and let us know how it goes?

Vince

Hi Vince,

I have now had time to test this and can confirm it works fine.

I have now requested to Barclays that they tidy up their Mobile static template before any of us start to use it as it currently looks very poor.

I will keep you informed as to what they say.

Barclays have got back to me on this now.

All they have said is they will forward the feedback to the developers of the platform.
