Have they copy & pasted their email address? In many cases I've seen where similar can happen whereby the email address is 'invalid' as there has been a space(s) either prior or after the email address, or both.
Someone in the last two weeks mentioned it would be best practice to have customers have to retype their email address which would then validate that both fields match.
