Nothing changed when the fault occured - I just received an email from a customer advising me of the problem.

Email a friend does not work either but Ask a Question does

Although I agree that the email system is essentially working it looks to me, without any real inside knowledge of the software, that a call is made to PHPmailer by the shopping cart and this is rejected.

Does this suggest that the class is already open?

It does suggest that it's been included twice. Are you using phpmailer elsewhere on the site?

Hi Andy,

Just did a search and found the correct one (latest version) in vsadmin/inc/class.phpmailer.php
but I also found (slightly different name) wp-includes/class-phpmailer.php.

I have just compared the files, the one in wp-includes is older, there are a small number of differences in the code but otherwise they are identical.

Is the cache on the server stuffed and do I need to clear it?
Thoughts?

Bingo!

Just disabled the contact form which also uses PHPmailer and functionality returns.

Need to solve that one, looks as if an automatic update to the plugin borked the site
