Vince & Andy, during the process of getting ready for GDPR, I've been carrying out extensive research about the Opt-In, Opt-Out part of sending marketing/newsletters and the fact that site owners email lists are going to reduce and it will take a long time to build a list back up again. My research lead me to data that suggests that we need Opt-In and Opt-Out tick boxes, with forced selection to maintain our email lists. the data is here https://www.zettasphere.com/gdpr-consent-opt-in-examples/ The data is quite convincing that this small change to the cart tick box would really help to maintain our email lists. What do you think? If other site owners would like this modification to the cart, please post to show support. If you guys are already on this, then please ignore this post. Hi Vince,
is this feature going to be a dropdown box only or will there be an option the have radio buttons or tick boxes?
I ask because radio buttons or tick boxes are easy and one click, a drop down box is a couple of extra clicks and not so convenient for the customer.

Hi Andy,
I went to your demo site put something in the cart, but can't see an email option at all on checkout. There is a drop down for payment method, but nothing for newsletter email. Are you sure it's there?

Ah great, I found it, thank you that should help.
Not wanting to sound ungrateful, but is there any possibility of tick boxes and/or radio buttons in the future?

Yes I agree. If not too much trouble this would be much better.

Agree with radio buttons.. would be better :) I'd also suggest that you may want to add this info to the update/hotfix desc for the latest upate... mailinglistdropdown=TRUE $mailinglistdropdown=TRUE; (I only knew about the change due to the ECT email, then had to search the forum to find info on the how to.) Well, three days in on GDPR and my email list has been hit.
With the newsletter opt-in ready ticked, I used to get around 80% of my orders join the mailing list, in the last three days that has gone down to around 15%.
I'll be installing the new updater this week and I'll let you know how the mailing list goes, cheers Vince and Andy.

For the first few years I had mine set that way too, but when I sent email campaigns, I got a ton of unsubscribes and some of them "reported" us as spammers, causing our email address to get blacklisted. Customers said they never signed up for the list. Some years back, I changed that and we also use the double opt in, where they must confirm via email. Yes we get a lot less signups, but we also now have a high quality list of subscribers who want our emails. It's not fair to "trick" customers into signing up for your list during checkout. I learned the hard way about this.

Dave, you must run a very different business model to mine, as we never get a ton of unsubscribes when we send out a newsletter with a clear unsubscribe link, we tend to get questions and sales, not angry potential customers.
I believe once I have installed the latest updater with the forced selection and customers actually have to think about it, our email subscriptions will continue going up as before GDPR, even though we're not "tricking" them.

Wow, that was quick!! Excellent news. Thank you Vince, kudos to you.
Could you let us know when it's in an updater as I don't want to update twice, thanks.
