It would help us if it was possible to use stock control for products where that is appropriate, but not to use it for all products. E.g. if the stock level was -1, it is disabled for that product and it can be ordered without restriction.

This would potentially allow us to use stock control for most of our products without having problems on the minority where it isn't practical. This is because as well as a bunch of standard products, we also do cut lengths of some items and we may have only one bulk length, but that could be cut into a variety of combinations of shorter lengths, depending on what people order. E.g. a 6m length could be sold as-is, or it could be cut into 3 x 2.0m, or 1x3.5 + 1x2.5, or 1x3.0 + 2x1.5, for instance. We don't want to say we've got 1x6.0m length in stock, only, as that would preclude someone ordering a 3.0m that we would cut from that single 6.0m piece. I'm simplifying, but that is why we could never see how stock control would work for those cut-to-length products, but it would be helpful for a bunch of off-the-shelf items.

The idea of -1 simply disabling it for those products where it's not appropriate seems a way of handling it hopefully pretty easily?

Thanks.

The usual solution for that is to just set the stock level to some improbably large number, a million or whatever, so it will never appear out of stock. Provided you don't display the amount of stock you hold on the client side that might be close enough for you, albeit a little clunky. A way to flag the item as exempt from stock control would be neater.

Actually using Peter's solution, you can still show your inventory to customers with a nifty parameter that was introduced in version 6.7

https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=107820 (See Vince's post)

quote:
But what I would do personally is start by giving all items a lot of stock. To do this to all items quickly, just go to the admin products page, display all the items and for the "Quick Entry..." choose "Stock". Then in the box above the Quick Entry enter your high stock number, say "10000" and then click "Add" or "Set". Then make sure you click the "Update" button. Then once you've done that just start entering your actual stock levels for the items that really use stock management.
In v6.7 there is an additional parameter...
$stockdisplaythreshold=1000;
Once set this parameter will cause the stock of products whose stock level is above this number to not display.

Excellent. Thanks lots. I don't really want to expose our stock levels to any customers, but having the stock control working for us, and helping us, would be useful. The combination of an imponderably high stock level for those things that don't need it, plus suppressing the figure across all products, should help a lot.

As you said, the quickest feature request ever :-)

I recently began using the stock management and this "stockdisplaythreshold=1000" setting made it possible for us because we don't monitor stock levels of many of our products.
The suggestion I have is apply this to options as well.
It would be nice if the stock level was hidden the same way for product that have stock assigned by options.
