We are using the meta description field in the admin which I know populates the meta description that would otherwise have been populated from the short description.

Out of my curiosity, is there a downside to not having the short product description in the product admin?
Is it best / should be left empty if using the meta description field in the admin?

If you are not displaying the short description and not using it for the meta content then I guess there's no need to have it at all and there's no downside.
