We get issues in our store periodically where a customer will sometimes get charged for the incorrect shipping method, or not charged for shipping at all. We think this issue stems from the fact that the "complete order" button and the shipping selection radio buttons are on the same page. We've been able to recreate issues in various ways where the final shipping method is incorrect by bouncing around in the cart using the back/forward buttons, by selecting a shipping method and then quickly clicking the 'place order button' before the page reloads, and a couple other oddball things.

More frequently, we get issues from people who attempt to check out go back to make a change to their order, only to have the cart reset to the default shipping method. This isn't really a bug, but we get complaints often about how the cart doesn't remember the shipping method they selected.

There are also some weird things we found where if you try to check out and have your card declined, that sometimes the cart will remember your shipping method when it returns you to the final checkout page, and other times it doesn't.

We'd like to request that future versions have an option to have a dedicated review page as the last step, that will show ALL details of the order and not allow you to edit them there. On this review page the only thing you'd be able to do is "complete order" button, and to enter your credit card info if necessary. Our thought is that a dedicated review page might be an easy way to sidestep some of these issues we're having, rather than having to hunt down all the weird edge cases. Even if issues arise with how the shipping method is remembered or selected, the hope is that final review page will help some of our customers catch it before they actually complete the order.

It sounds like 7.1.7 update addresses this a bit with the new customer details page at the end of the cart, though I'll admit we haven't really had the chance to look at it since the ECT Demo store hasn't been updated to the new version yet.

If you have ways that are reproducible to cause problems in the checkout then I'm very interested to hear them, and a way to remember previous shipping selections does sound like a good idea. I'll have a look at that as soon as all this holidays stuff is over.
In the meantime, the UK demos store does have the latest update installed...
