Good evening all,
I have just changed from Dreamweaver MX to Expression Web 4, downloaded my latest website from the server. When I go to make some changes in main.dwt it says there are 21 files linked but for some reason only 1 updates whilst all others are skipped. Any advice how to resolve this issue would be appreciated.
Regards Tim

I would start by unlinking them and relinking them and see what happens. Also, make sure none of the pages are open in E/W when saving the DWT file.
In E/W go to Site > Site Settings > untick "Maintain the site using hidden metadata files" click ok, then go back in and tick that to turn it back on.
From there, go to tools > recalculate Hyperlinks
This page may help - https://www.thesitewizard.com/expression-web/fix-dwt-not-updating-all-attached-files.shtml

Thank you for your response. I have unlinked all pages but when I go to link them again to main.dwt it states:
The content outside the <html> tag in the attached page will be erased when the DWT is attached. You can preserve the content by moving it into an editable region. Script can be moved in the editable region in the <head> tag. Then it asks me do I want to continue with the attachment?
Sorry for a lack of knowledge but what does this mean?
When I click yes it then says:
Editable regions in the current page and DWT do not match. Match regios in the current page to regions in the DWT.
It then shows Current Page as (Body) and DWT as body?
Again all advice is much appreciated.

I was a little surprised to read this post - switching from Dreamweaver to Expression Web.? I have been searching around and reviewing alternatives to Expression Web. The latest EW version is 10 years old and support for it ended years ago. I was just assuming that EW was going to phase out really soon and I was going to be left in my canoe without a paddle. I was actually considering switching from EW to Dreamweaver. But since you just did the opposite, I guess I'll stop worrying so much about EW phasing out anytime soon.?

It's all relative really; the OP says he was using Dreamweaver MX, which is 18 years old , so switching to 8 year old Expression Web is sort of an upgrade I suppose. Both are entirely obsolete of course, but if you can keep them running they will do OK for simple edits. The only one that's at all current is the subscription version of Dreamweaver CC, but few people here have an appetite for a $30/mo subscription and it's way more than you need for tweaking your template. I didn't realize Dreamweaver was that old!
It took alot of arm twisting to get me to switch from Frontpage to Expression Web. I'm one of those people that learn just enough about something in order to use it. It frightens me to the core knowing that Expression Web is just about obsolete and I will undoubtedly need to find and learn an entirely new program just to stay afloat.
I know I'm in a PHP forum here, but my website is actually ASP (as I'm sure you already know Peter). As I stated earlier, I have been searching around for another editor. I am wondering if there is anything that is as easy to use as Expression Web, and comparable.?

The choice is pretty simple, if you want to work with .dwt templates to do your global edits then you only have Dreamweaver or Expression to choose from, they are the only editors that can use them. So you either pony up the $30/mo for Dreamweaver CC or you continue on with Expression. Obsolete or not, I don't suppose Expression will stop working any time soon, maybe if Microsoft eventually drop support for 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows. Apple did that last year with macOS Catalina which killed all 32-bit applications for good but it wasn't real popular even though they gave ten years warning, so I doubt Microsoft will want to emulate that in a hurry. Just a quick note that there is another web editor called BlueGriffon of which the latest version is from October 2019. I've never used it so can't say how it fares against EW or other editors. It has been listed at the foot of this page for as long as I can recall - https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/help/design.aspSadly BlueGriffon does not support Dreamweaver's DWT template system. You can edit all your existing pages, create new ones, and so on, but the editor has no equivalent where you can change the design of your site in the template, and have it automatically replicated throughout your site. Also BlueGriffon does not have an integrated file upload manager that can track the pages that you have modified, and publish only those that have changed. Not really an issue IMHO as I have always used FileZilla for uploading & downloading pages. If you wish you can install a plugin that will allow you to publish your pages from within BlueGriffon, but you will still have to remember yourself which pages you have modified and select them for uploading. That said, unless you suffer from amnesia between the time you change the page and upload it, this is generally not a big deal, and it's just a few seconds (or less) of extra work to select the files to publish. My DWCS6 ticks along very nicely with no issues editing the .dwt files for the ECT software. Steve Bolton Lancashire England

Here is my preference. For updating global changes, I keep and use Expression web. I am usually in it for no more than a few minutes, and out, then upload changed pages via FTP. For individual page editing, noting beats (in my book) Notepad++ https://notepad-plus-plus.org/
It's a really smart program that will help you visualize your code through color coding. It's not a what you see, is what you get editor, so it helps if you understand basic HTML syntax at minimum.
Thanks, David

The only time I use DWCS6 is if the site is built from a .dwt file. Notepad++ is probably my most used programme, along with FileZilla FTP. I love the ability to right click the remote file and choose View / Edit which then opens the file locally to edit in Notepad++. Once saved I then back heel it to the server. Done! I've had clients send me text copy for their sites all in capitals. WFT!! Notepad++ sorts through that with its Convert Case To in an instant! I'm a stickler for all HTML source code being left aligned and all spaces removed and Notepad++ does that in two mouse clicks. Doing so also has a dramatic effect on the page file size. Such a powerful programme & it's free! Steve Bolton Lancashire England
