Is there a way to get fancy with the discounts section and offer a group by option for customers. I am needing to create a link to send to a customer that will post it to a web site, and when x amount of people commit to buying the product from the link the product is then offered at a big discount. These types of discounts are popular on forum message board for any topic you can think of.

Hi, there is no group buy option, and I have seen this sort of thing before as well.
I don't think it has ever come up on the forum here though.

You could post it in the suggestions forum as a possible feature. ECT can gauge interest from there.

Alternately, I can think of ways this can be developed work with the cart, but it would be a custom development solution.
I would reach out to one of the 3rd party developers if you think you want to go that route.
