Good evening,
Having looked at the Google Search Console (Speed For Mobile) it is showing as a large number of my web pages are slow to load, example https://www.tjmotorsport.co.uk/products.php?cat=675&pg=6.
I then open up pagespeed insights and it shows the aggregate first contentful paint as 4.9s. It then goes on to give some opportunities for improvement to include:
Reduce server response times (TTFB) - Time To First Byte identifies the time at which your server sends a response. 3.16 s Eliminate render-blocking resources - Resources are blocking the first paint of your page. Consider delivering critical JS/CSS inline and deferring all non-critical JS/styles. 1.51 s Remove unused CSS 0.45 s Serve images in next-gen formats 0.3 s Defer offscreen images 0.14 s
Looking at the above the first 2 are the big ones. Is there anything I can do to improve these?
Many thanks again. Tim

Hi Tim, that first one seems like a big problem to me. Who are you hosting with?
Thanks, David

Hi, in that case you might open a ticket with them and see if they have any thoughts on the slow server response. I would try to get that one fixed as it does seem like a long time
Thanks, David

Actually, we already addressed this in a support ticket in January . Our finding was that all the pages that were flagged as slow contained the filter bar sidebar thingy. Our suggestion in the first instance was to remove it for the time being and compare results. Thank you Peter, I will look at that.
As this is a little beyond my skillset, just want to confirm would that filter affect the response time of a server?

Well it's not so much the response time of the server, as the time it takes to grind through everything the filter bar is trying to do with the database and then present the results. If I recall correctly, the filter bar was really slow when it was first introduced but was quickly improved to be at least "OK", depending on the number of attributes in use. May be that your database needs some additional indexes or some other optimization, Vince is great at that stuff and I'd get him involved if you can. But first, maybe just comment out the include for the filter bar and run your tests again, just to satisfy yourself that the pages are super fast without it. Evening,
By removing the filter side bar my pagespeed is now down to 3.9s overall from 4.9s on the same page.
