On the first screen in the shopping cart at checkout, how do I not show the Paypal button and just have the checkout button here?

However, on the 2nd screen of the shopping cart (after clicking on the checkout button) I have the payment method with both Paypal button and Check by Mail with radio buttons which I want.

Hi, there are a number of Paypal services and the one on the first page should be Paypal express. It bypasses the address entry page because it gets the address from Paypal.
If you don't want to offer that, you should be able to turn that service off there in the admin payment processors section.

If you have paypal direct payments then you are obliged in your agreement to also have paypal express payments set and this is why the option to remove express payments is greyed out. But express payments is really cool and a lot of customers like it so maybe it's not such a bit problem?

Just PayPal and check by mail

I removed Paypal Express, and the button left the screen (less confusing for customers)! So by clicking on the checkout button once again, and going to the next screen they see the option of either paying by check or going to Paypal (which works).

I removed Paypal Express and then re-added it, now things are working!
