Our site was working earlier today, but all the sudden we get: You need to set your database connection in vsadmin/db_conn_open.php

What would cause this when I wasn't working or making changes to the site?

I think there could be a number a things that happened to cause this.
Is it possible you have some kind of (new) directive in an .htaccess file and it's causing the dbconnopen file to not be found?

no, I have changed anything in this site in a while. it's the baby of the family

If the host made some kind of change, it's possible the path to the database might change.
Have you asked them?
Have you attempted to fix the connection? That may reveal the culprit actually.

For that matter, some hosts have databases on separate servers and the database server could be down.

It had the old script, I copied the new script off of a working site, changing the $db_host, $db_username, $db_password, $db_name

Now I get:
Database Connect Error (1045) Access denied for user 'name XXXXX'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
You need to set your database connection in vsadmin/db_conn_open.php

Regarding host, all 3 sites are with the same host the other two are working.

Have you tried getting your host involved? It may well be the know what is causing the problem.

You may want to try resetting your database user password, checking that the database user is assigned to the database, and the user has the appropriate privileges assigned.

Also, if your database user password has a dollar sign ($) in it then the password should be enclosed single quotes (') and not double-quotes (") in your db_conn_open.php file.

Well, I just had a different site do the same thing as the one last week. I contacted my host and they reset the database (something about getting bottled up with open connections or some such). Anyway, the website and shopping cart are working again. But now I can't get in the back end of the store. HELP !!

Are you using a hidden vsadmin folder? If so, you would need to change the DB connection password there as well.

WAIT !! I can't log into my secret admin, but can into the vsadmin. How do I change it back?

If you can get into the admin @ vsadmin, and not your secret copy of vsadmin, they copy the db_conn_open file from vsadmin to secret admin and upload to the server.

Thanks Marshal, they told me that the PW wasn't changed but it did. I uploaded to the secret admin and it's working again.

I hate this stuff changing all by it's self. That is frustrating !! I totally understand when "I BREAK IT"
