My existing website is non responsive and not mobile friendly
I was going to update to the Premium Generic version
But this is so much work,as I have over 3000 products
Is it essential that a website is responsive?
Is it just for SEO rankings?

The 3000 products are easy. Just move your database over to the new responsive design when you are ready.
Responsive design is a must. Google knows that your site is not responsive and they will not show your pages to mobile users who might be searching for your products.
There are more mobile users than computer users these days.
If you want to grow your business, you need to have a responsive website.

A - Yes it is. If you have ever visited a non-responsive designed website you will instantly realise why

B - No, it's about the whole deal regarding the websites

C - It isn't but it is, if you get my meaning. Love Google or loathe Google, they are the chiefs banging the drum & basically you should be dancing to their tune.

Having said all that your website should be setup in all aspects for the visitor experience, not dancing to the tunes of the search engines (SE's), but having said that you do have to dance to the tunes of the SE's. Sounds all a bit contradictory, well, sometimes that is life & the way the mop flops.
