Since recent we notice our website frontend is getting slow(er). Which sometimes results in errors in the browser which might be caused by some timeouts.
We even sometimes get a 500 Server error while our database is working in SQL Servermanager and in the admin section.

When we use an incognito window in the browser the site is much faster.
When we are not logged in as client the site also seems faster until we add the first item in our cart. When adding a second item in our cart the website (addtocart) is very slow and the spinner sometimes is visible for more than 10 seconds.

So might be some cookies or scripts are slowing down our website.

Has anybody got an idea how to solve this and how to optimize our website for speed?

Greetings,

Jaap

I would start by taking a close look at my hosting.
Are you on a shared server with other websites?
Who is your host?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply.

That was my first thought as well. But this would not explain why the backoffice (admin section) is working fast/normal and it is only the frontend which is slow.

Greetings,

Jaap

I understand.
Keep in mind there are no reports of site slowness from other users.
Have you checked your google search console account for clues?

Thanks,
David

The GTmetrix Website Performance test tool will likely reveal why it's slow and discover optimization opportunities.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the suggestion. Will have a look.

Hi David,

Our website runs on a shared hosting and our database itself on our other domain with a VPS.
After some testing we suspect our database to be the main bottleneck.
We have uploaded our whole new webdesign to our VPS server so site and database are on the same server. At first this looked to work a bit faster, but this might be because the product images are not on this server. On this server all is also slow and when we get errors these all seem to be related to database handling and connection. Errors point to lines in the code like: rs.open sSQL,cnn,0,1

We have already used the included database utility. What more can we do to make our database perform better?

Greetings,

Jaap

Hi Jaap
We do have a Database Health Check product where we will spend an hour or so going over the database to see if we can pinpoint any problems.

Thanks Vince.
I am sure such check is in order.
First we will check with our provider to see if all is working correct and our hosting parameters are still up to what is needed.
Then we will order the health check.

Greetings,

Jaap
