Good afternoon! I'm wondering if I can use the option field "alt ID" to build a SKU on the fly. My product will be regulated starting in February, and my previous method of assigning a model number based on the customer's order won't be sufficient. Instead, each variable for the custom sling now has a numerical value based on the chosen options. That way, in the unlikely event of a recall for one of those options (for example, if one of my fabric colors was shown to be prone to tearing), I could tell the customer "look at the SKU, and if the second two numbers are 12, your sling is part of the recall". I'd like to have that available in my customer database as well, for ease of contacting them.

Long story short, if in my example, my main fabric types have the initial SKU of 1-5, and I have fabric colors 01-23, ring types 1-3, ring colors 1-17, and shoulder styles 1-2, I can then build a 7-digit SKU for the registration card. What I would like is for those options to combine within the cart somehow. (This might be a case for a developer, I know.) So if someone orders a red linen sling with gold rings and a pleated shoulder, I know their SKU is 1182051, but I'd like to be able to pull that from the database as well.

Does that make sense? If so, can I use the alt product IDs to do it? Thank you if you got this far :)

Why not use one of the extra fields available in the product admin? See https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=104928

Each option will change the SKU. If it were as simple as the one product having a single SKU, it wouldn't be an issue, but I can't do it with just the product admin fields.

Hi Jan you should be able to do that using the Alt-id for options. https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/help/alt-prod-id.asp

I actually went ahead and did that, without having created an alt-id product for each one (which of course immediately created errors in a test order), but because of the huge number of possible combinations, there's no way I can make an alt product for every combination. My example is literally what I have -- 5 fabric types, one of them with 23 colors, 17 ring colors... there are hundreds of possible combinations.

Hi Jan

The Alt Prod ID feature was set up for this kind of scenario but not really for the number of permutations you have available. It might be worth seeing if a developer could automate the constructions of the SKUs for you.
