I made the changes for seo friendly urls as described here https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/seo/search-engine-friendly-urls-php.asp

the product names show in the urls very nicely and all the links work properly but the images on the products pages do not display. The detail page images do display.

It looks like you are missing the base href setting https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/seo/search-engine-friendly-urls-php.asp

<base href="http<?php if(@$_SERVER['HTTPS']=='on') print 's'?>://www.yourstoreurl.com/" />

Make sure that comes before the css lines in the head section of products.php and categories.php
