How can I make an image in the slideshow a link (instead of just the caption at the bottom)?

In the code you'll have something like this

<img src="images/banner.jpg" alt="" />
<p class="caption">My Caption</p>

you can make the image a link like this

<a href="mypage.php"><img src="images/banner.jpg" alt="" /></a>
<p class="caption">My Caption</p>
