What bookkeeping does the client use?
We use quickbooks and for quite a while we entered transactions from the store manually. Typically entering just the totals to keep it simple. We already have a record in the store of what was purchased, so we felt no need to enter all line items. Some time back though, we began to use t-hub - a 3rd party app that has served us well. The whole process is highly automated will all order details pulled into quickbooks.
I guess it goes back to what bookkeeping system is being used and from there see what options are available. There is built in exporting of orders, so there is quite a bit of data there that can be used in lots of ways.
