Guys can this be a direct upgrade from 6.1 to 6.9 or is there a path to follow?

Yes you can apply the 6.9 updater directly. You need to be aware of any mods / add-ons or any of the website files where there has been any code modifications which could be overwrote or the mods/add-ons not being 6.9 compatible. You can not roll back the updaters though so just tread lightly.

It's worthwhile checking the important info Andy has posted regarding the 6.9.3 updater - https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=110209

Yes, what Will wrote, but they way I read what he wrote, updating is a scary thing, and really it's not.
The important thing is to just follow a few important steps.
Take a backup of your vsadmin folder and, if you use a secret copy to administer the back end, take a backup of that too.
Next, and even more important, take a backup of the database.
If you are on access, that's real easy as the file will be right there on your server.
If you are on an msSQL or mySQL database, then there are more steps, but make sure you get a backup.

Then run the update and check your store to be sure all seems to be working. I usually start by placing a test order to make sure checkout is working as expected.

Backup - Update - Test
It's that easy.
