While trying to see past the absurdity of the new Colorado Tax rules and understand them, I wondering about insights on how to collect varying tax rates within Colorado in a eCommerce Template store.

The burden this action puts on small businesses is unbelievable. I'm wondering if out of state retailers selling to people in Colorado will also need to break down over 300 jurisdictions in Colorado AND other states will follow suit.


I think the easiest, least costly option (for now) is to charge every CO sale at an 'average rate' of state tax plus 'average jurisdiction tax' and then submit a return for the ones that actually are sold to on a case by case basis. Then pay any additional cost out of pocket vs trying to split hairs. We will need to set up a sub account for each fricking jurisdiction for the submittals each sales tax return.

I also anticipate that if out of state retailers do not have to adhere to the higher tax rate, that are sales in state will drop and the submittals will be very few.

Who dreams up this stuff?!

Florida has many more tax districts than that.
What we do is collect the discretionary tax four our county, even though the sale is delivered to another Florida county with a different discretionary rate.
We had a major sales tax audit last year.
The tax man sat in my office for 3 days working us over.

This never came up and we came out of the audit just fine.

I am not telling you how to handle your business, just what we do.

I also agree that these new laws are a huge burden on internet sellers and all I can say is I never supported our current administration and will not. People need to educate themselves (memes are not education ), then vote.

Colorado is not the first. In fact all states now collect varying surtax rates based on location within the state, above and beyond the standard State rate.

Is the state tax charged by billing address or shipping address?

Billing if there is no shipping address added or shipping if shipping to a taxable state.
