I'd like to offer a free gift with every order for New Year's Day.

Can anyone suggest a way to do this so that there is some mention of it on the thank you page/customer email.

I can make it work using a zero rate discount and applicable wording but this only shows on the shipping page of the cart.

You can do that by adding the text to the footer of the receipt in the admin email messaging page.
