Hello,

My cart has been up and running very well for several years, and I thought it was time to have a mobile friendly version. I followed the instructions and made a mobile friendly cart (https://www.rockyknobwoodcrafts.com/Mobile/index.html) but I am unable to add items to the cart and I don't know where to start to troubleshoot it.

Also, I had to copy everything in the 'prodimages/' folder to the 'Mobile/prodimages/' folder to get them so show up in the mobile cart. I made sure the Mobile/vsadmin/includes.php file had this line "$defaultprodimages = 'prodimages/';"

Also, if you have any suggestions on how to improve my mobile cart (I'm pretty new at this) I am open to them.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Brian
Your first problem is that you don't have the ectcart.js javascript file included. But you may also have problems as you are in a subdirectory. Really though, the idea of having a separate site for mobile went out a few years back and what the tendency is today is "Responsive Design" which adapts to the device, and that way you only have to maintain one site. If you are interested we have responsive designs here...
https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/responsive-design-ecommerce.asp
And replacement software deals here as you already have a license...

Thank you for your prompt reply. The "Responsive Design" probably is the best way to go, however, what I sell is custom signs. The full site has several pages showing all of the options available such as material/color, fonts, graphics and the like with ECT in a frame (my site is https://www.rockyknobwoodcrafts.com/index.html if you want to see what I'm talking about). Could the Responsive Design be put in a frame for the full site but be frameless for mobile users?

Hi Brian
Frames were again something that were popular years ago but really, there are so many disadvantages to Frames I would say it's a really, really bad idea to have them. The advantages they had like load time are now mitigated by things like faster internet speeds.

After doing a bit of research and figuring out what a frame really is, that is not what was used when my site was built 15 years ago, it was a Dynamic Web Template, clearly I had no idea what I was talking about (sorry). So, I guess the question is, can the "Responsive Design" be used with my DWT in the full site (which would give my customers a lot more information) and without in the mobile friendly site?

Hi Brian
I'm sorry if we are still not understanding each other, but if you have a Responsive Design you don't need a "mobile friendly" site as the responsive design is already mobile friendly. It will adapt itself to the mobile screen size and format.

So if I go with a Responsive Design can I make pages to show all of the font options, material/color options, tell about graphics options, show my sample gallery, tell about the wholesale signs and so on? I have to have a page for reviews to redirect customers to my Google, FaceBook, and Yelp review pages. As nearly everything I make is one off it is difficult to utilize the ECT customer reviews and ratings as it is on a per product basis, I need all product and service reviews in one place.

If the idea of having a separate site for mobile went out a few years back then why is there a help file to explain how to set up a mobile friendly store (https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/help/mobile-friendly.asp)? Instructions, I might add, are apparently incomplete as I followed them to the letter and the ectcart.js javascript was never addressed.

Hi Brian
With respect, it does start by saying...
quote:
If you want to set up a mobile friendly store we recommend you take a look at our Responsive Designs that adapt to browser width, screen size and orientation.

If you prefer not to work from a responsive design, we have added some extra mobile friendly features to Ecommerce Templates.
It is up to you at the end of the day and there is no one way to do most things, but I'm just telling you what the modern way to do this is. If you really want to go with a mobile site then do so and I'll make sure the information about the ectcart.js file gets added to those instructions.

If I am unable to include the information pages that I need with the Responsive Design then I need to stay with what I have.

I have added the ectcart.js javascript to the Mobile/js folder but am still unable to add items to the cart. Also, the product images are only visible if I copy them from the 'prodimages/' folder to the 'Mobile/prodimages/' folder, and again, I made sure the Mobile/vsadmin/includes.php file had this line "$defaultprodimages = 'prodimages/';"

Hi Brian
I tried the link you posted and still can't see any reference to the ectcart.js script...
https://www.rockyknobwoodcrafts.com/Mobile/index.html

For your images, they are all relative locations, for instance...
prodimages/A1m.JPG
But what you could do is make them all relative to the site root, for instance...
/prodimages/A1m.JPG
That way they could be accessed by the main site or the mobile site equally.

I double checked the Mobile/js folder and the ectcart.js script is there. Should it be somewhere else, or is there a file (such as includes.php) that needs to be changed? I am unsure how to proceed from here to get this to work.

For the images, how do I make them all relative to the site root, what do I need to change? I tried changing the
$defaultprodimages = 'prodimages/';
to
$defaultprodimages = '/prodimages/';
in the Mobile/vsadmin/includes.php but it made no difference.

Hi,
Yes the ectcart.js is on the server here - https://www.rockyknobwoodcrafts.com/Mobile/js/ectcart.js

But you need to call it, so you need to add the following line below to all your files before the closing head tag </head>:

<script src="js/ectcart.js"></script>

This will only change new images you enter in the products admin, which by default now will have /prodimages instead of just prodimages. But it won't affect product images that are already in the database. You'll have to modify those.

Okay, we are getting close. The images are working and items can be added to the cart. The two new issues are: 1) the background of the "add to cart" screen is transparent which makes it very difficult to see the Check Out and Continue Shopping buttons. 2) When I hit Check Out in the shopping cart it goes to the full site and everything is way to small to read. Click this link to see what I'm talking about:

Hi Brian
You've lost the reference to ectcart.css and that's why the add to cart background is transparent.
For issue 2, I think you need to override the Store URL which is normally set in the admin main settings page. To do that, set the following in your mobile site includes.php file...
$orstoreurl='https://www.rockyknobwoodcrafts.com/Mobile/';
$orstoreurlssl='https://www.rockyknobwoodcrafts.com/Mobile/';

It looks like it is good to go, thanks so much for all of your help. I do have one last question, how do I proceed when an updater is applied, will the updater be applied to the main site and then copy the vsadmin folder to the /Mobile folder or is the updater applied to the /Mobile folder as well, or is it something completely different that I'm not thinking of?

Hi Brian
The updater is in two steps really, you have to open the updatestore.php script in your browser and you have to copy the files. As you only have one database (which both sites use) you only have to run the updatestore.php script once. But you have to copy the files twice. Once to the main site and once to the /Mobile site.
I'm glad things are coming together Brian!!

Hi Vince,

A while back you assisted me in getting a mobile friendly site up and running. At that time you recommended upgrading to a Responsive Design site but I was very reluctant (well... resistant). I must say, you were right and I was wrong (okay you can wipe that smile off your face now ). I am going to go with a Responsive Design, but I have two questions: 1) where will I find instructions on implementing a responsive design site on my current site? 2) the Responsive Design upgrades we are looking at are the Monochrome, Indoors, Styles, Cards, can you provide a URL of the customer currently using each one of these? The Live Demo was helpful, but it wasn't complete.
Thanks so much from your help,
Brian

Hi Brian
I won't look smug, I promise you.
But the instructions for setting up a responsive design site are the same as for any other I guess. What is it in particular you are looking for instructions on?
We do have a live stores directory here...
https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/livestores/
And you can find examples of the different template designs there.

Hi Vince,

On a new set up the control panel needs to set up, products need to be added, the database needs to be linked, as well as many other things that are already completed on my site (what about my vsadmin folder and my includes.php file). Will I be getting a new control panel, do I need to export all the products so I can import them after the new site is set up, will all of the product images still be where they're supposed to? Or, is the Responsive Design just a DWT in which I need to put my products.php, categories.php, and cart.php (as well as others)? So as this is not a completely new install it will be a great deal of the manual that can be skipped over, correct?
Again, thank you so much for all your help.
Brian

Hi Brian,
It really sounds like you need some technical help here and what you're asking for is probably beyond the scope of the forum so it may be better if you hire somebody just to set you off in the right direction.

I'm not saying we can't help you, but it maybe better if you hire somebody for a few hours work just to set up your test site so you can work on that while your live site is still running, and go from there perhaps?

If you want to discuss this further just click on my name and send me an email

But if you do want to continue yourself here's the procedure:
1. Take a copy of the database and link it to your development site
2. Place the development site in a sub folder so it doesn't effect your live site
3. When you're happy with everything just move the site files over to the live site location on your server.
