I need to be away for several days but would like to keep the store open to take orders.
Could you advise on a temporary way for me to add a message in the checkout (preferably on the shipping options page) to let customers know that any orders taken will have a delay in shipping?

I make one called Seasonal and then add the content region to the pages where I want them( home or product detail or cart etc.). Then if we are away for Christmas or whatever I just fill it in say we are closed and will reopen on the 7th etc. and hey presto - people can still place the orders but know that they will not be dispatched until we are back. Just remember to remove when you are back.
I think it would be quite nice to have a built-in option to add a temporary message in the checkout via admin. We occasionally have weather delays to shipping or have to be away due to illness. I'm sure others do too.
