I have a need to add a <textarea> to the Product Detail page, so the client can tell us what EXACT SIZE they need for that product.

Hi, you will want to use product options for that.
You could make a drop down choice if you only offer certain sizes, but if it's unlimited, then maybe the text option is the way to go.
This is a very flexible feature allowing you to offer many option choices to your customers.
