Because I cannot upload my pages on the trail hosting I decided to insert a page manually.
In the field Prod Name I entered the product name something like Creenstone mid blue light weight below knee length coat. when I opened the url I had an error myectstore.com/Creenstone mid blue light weight below knee length coat
I then changed the Prod Name to Creenstone-2034.html and when I select the image the page opens at myectstore.com/Creenstone-2034.html but it is still a 404 error.
Can anyone say what I am doing wrong please? Thank you John

Hi Vince, I am getting confused, you say:
No, you cannot upload pages using the trial hosting. Is That correct? --------------------------------- You say: but you won't be able to if you move from the trial to the paid version. This makes sense as I would be using another server, is that correct
Regarding the error would you please refer the last panel of my previous post it is explained there. Many thanks John

There's a couple of things going on there. First, I kind of doubt you really have or want a product named "Creenstone-2034.html", so you can get rid of the .html part of that. The other issue is the hyphen. Because most people have product names with spaces, and you can't have spaces in a URL, by default the cart replaces those spaces with hyphens when it builds the URL for you. That does cause an issue if you already have a hyphen in there, but omitting the hyphen will solve it, or you can set the URL manually to anything you like using the Static URL field. Thanks, That helps So there is a choice 'Has Static Page' which shows a tick or 'Has Static Url' where I have now entered Creenstone coat
If I go through the menus to open the one item inserted so far, via Clothing/CreenstoneCoats & Outerwear/ https://johnhardy.myectstore.com/products/Creenstone-Coats-%26-Outerwear is opened but this does not seem to open a page with the has Static URL of Creenstone coat. It seems to be using the Section.
Will you please clarify this aspect for me?
Many thanks John

In creating a product it seems there are 3 options for entering the wording of a url and I am not sure which one I should be using.
Has static page (with tick) Has Static URL Section
Can you help me on this please? Thanks John

Mostly you don't need to worry about entering anything for the static URL at all, it's handled automatically and a product named "Creenstone coat" will get you an automatically generated search engine optimized URL of site.com/creenstone-coat. But if the product name has a bunch of ugly special characters or is a bit long or too similar to some other product you have you can override the automation and build your own custom URL with "Has Static URL". "Section" denotes which category the product is in. Oh, one other tip, you don't want to paste product descriptions from Microsoft Office, it writes the worst html imaginable. So where you think you pasted in this "Creenstone mid blue & light weight below knee length coat. Waist can be gathered", what you actually got from Office was this mess: <style> <!--table {mso-displayed-decimal-separator:"\."; mso-displayed-thousand-separator:"\,";} @page {margin:.75in .7in .75in .7in; mso-header-margin:.3in; mso-footer-margin:.3in;} tr {mso-height-source:auto;} col {mso-width-source:auto;} br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;} td {padding-top:1px; padding-right:1px; padding-left:1px; mso-ignore:padding; color:black; font-size:11.0pt; font-weight:400; font-style:normal; text-decoration:none; font-family:Calibri, sans-serif; mso-font-charset:0; mso-number-format:General; text-align:general; vertical-align:bottom; border:none; mso-background-source:auto; mso-pattern:auto; mso-protection:locked visible; white-space:nowrap; mso-rotate:0;} --> </style><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="220"><tbody><tr height="20"><td height="20" width="220">Creenstone mid blue light weight below knee length coat. Waist can be gathered</td></tr></tbody></table> Peter Professional ecommerce web hosting services Shared hosting Windows & Linux | Dedicated servers | Domains | SSL Ecommerce Templates specialists since 2003 https://servelink.com

Thanks for the help much clearer now.
This code problem makes me wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that I cannot upload anything from the csv file?
Is there an alternative method I could use for uploading? Regards
John

FAO Insight I notice that on page http://www.dlss.ca/products.asp?cat=PHP+Admin there is an item called Advanced CSV Category Data Utility
Advanced CSV Category Data Utility enables the store admin to download a CSV of all the categories in the ECT store. This utility has the ability to Add, Delete and Update records in a single upload.
Is this what I need to upload a csv?

Hi John, you would not be able to use any add on mods with the hosted store.
The problem with your csv file is just the formatting - that's all.
As a test, you can download the store inventory csv and then without doing anything with the file, upload that file as a test to confirm the feature works.
Thanks, David

One more thing John, you might try a csv editor. I use one that is no longer available, but there are a number of them out there. I have heard of people using this one https://www.ronsplace.eu/products/ronseditor and it has a free version with most features available.
I am guessing that between copy/pasting data and using excel to edit, it's wreaking havoc on your csv file.
If you do copy data, try "cleaning" it by pasting it into notepad (all windows pcs have notepad) and then copy it out from notepad and into your csv file. This strips out the nasty bits Peter has shown.

Thanks David, I copied from my csv file into notepad and then copied from Notepad back into a new csv file.
I then used update the database selection as I have no idea what is already in the table. This leads me to the question how can I see what is in the database table?
I have not yet tried the cvs editor, but will do.
Regards
John

Thanks for the explanation Vince, That would be fine if it was working for me. I downloaded the Trial version of https://www.ronsplace.eu/products/ronseditor It really does make any editing easier and very clear. I then copied this to note pad and tried the update this to the table with the following result.
You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MariaDB server version for the right syntax to use near 'psection pprice pwholesaleprice plistprice pshipping pshipping2 pweight pdisp...' at line 1open_basedir: YES ERROR: Column list is: "pid pname psection pprice pwholesaleprice plistprice pshipping pshipping2 pweight pdisplay psell pbackorder pgiftwrap pexemptions pinstock ptax pdropship pstaticpage pstockbyopts precommend porder psku pmanufacturer psearchparams ptitle pmetadesc pstaticurl pdescription pminquant pdateadded plongdescription" Rows successfully updated 0
This page took: 0.0017 seconds Update Successful !
I tried to see any data at .myectstore.com but could see no sign of anything. What to do?
Regards

Thanks, that helps. As in the other thread on this subject, you are missing all your commas in the header row. CSV is an acronym for Comma Separated Values. All the values have to be separated by commas, not tabs or spaces or anything else. Like this: pID, pName, pSection, pPrice, ...etc... , pLongDescription Same with all the other rows. You should be able to export it that way from whatever software you are using to create it. Well, I think that just confirms that Excel stinks for this particular task. Maybe a Windows user can comment on how best to handle it. But I can see your data is still not correctly formatted; there's places there should be values that there are none or they are incorrect values. pDisplay and pSell for example, should have values of 1 or 0 and not Y or N. You really want to follow the format of the original (working) products that were there, and if you are not changing defaults on certain columns you can just remove those columns. That simplifies the file greatly and saves you try to upload empty values that are required.
