I believe it was said I should not do the upload using the Excel file, better with Note Pad,
but it seems the is no way to control this and I do not wish to uninstall Excel.

Are you selecting "update" or "add" to database?

If you are adding new items, you should select ADD to database.
Perhaps you had selected update instead.

Your absolutely correct.
I am sure I was told somewhere that if the db had data already I had to update but i have to add.

So I tried to load all data and received the error
You have the $detlinkspacechar parameter set as "-" but have products where the Static URL or Product Name uses this character
and these will not display properly. Consider removing the $detlinkspacechar parameter,
or replacing it with a space in the Static URL for these products
I wonder if you please can decipher this a little for me?

No, you already have a product in the database with pID alp3033, so you can only UPDATE that one, not ADD. Just to clarify this for me please.
When I have a number of products already in the store, and a new list of products for upload,
I could have some updated products and some new products in that list.

Do I need to carry out two update operations?
1 Update existing products
2 Add new non existing products.
