 Suddenly getting IPN Notification warnings

I'm suddenly getting emails from Paypal with IPN notification warnings. Oddly, when I check the IPN history in my account, it shows some of the notifications "sent" others as "retrying". I have made no changes to the site, no updates or anything before starting to get these messages. What could be the issue? The ones that say "retrying" the http response code is 500. The ones that say "sent" are response code 200. But on the ones that say "retrying" the Notification URL is simply vsadmin/ppconfirm.php. On the ones that say "sent", it is the full url, i.e. http://www.mysite/ followed by the path to the ppconfirm.php file. The notification URL that I have set in my Paypal account is the full URL. So why are some of the notifications trying to go to a URL that's not really a URL at all?

I don't think the full / not full URL is the issue as if the URL didn't exist you would be getting a 404 Not Found error. I think it is just the way the URLs are displayed.
Do you get any details about the 500 error at all? If we can get the details it should give a good clue as to the problem.

Vince, you've sent me a couple of emails telling me how to resolve this issue, but I'm still getting the notification errors on Paypal Express or direct Paypal payments. And now the software isn't sending me order notifications because Paypal has disabled IPNs, although the payments are going through.

I've just purchased the updaters with apply updater option. I really need to get this fixed. Can you assist?
