Is there a way to pre-select a product variant for the user? eg if I sell a t-shirt with sizes S,M,L can I specify something like http://xyz.com/proddetail.php?prod=tshirt&size=M ?

I have a trick for doing that, but it works based on the option ID.
It's not a build in feature though.
Just a bit of javascript to handle things.
