 Mailing List - 'From' Address?

Hi,

I'm testing the mailing list function with HTML-format messages (entered as plain text without using the HTML editor), but am struggling to get a 'friendly name' showing reliably as the sender for different mail clients.

Just using the bare e-mail address gives <Unknown Sender> on some clients so I tried adding the friendly name with the actual e-mail address such as:

Friendly Name <aa@a.com>

but that only works with Outlook and not the K9-Mail client I use on Android, which still shows <Unknown Sender>
In fact, Outlook shows seems to double-up the From address it shows:

Friendly Name <aa@a.com> <Friendly Name <aa@a.com>>
...which looks bizarre.

I tried with the "Friendly Name" quoted, but that fails to send the e-mail at all.

Any suggestions on how we should use this, please?

Thanks in advance :-)

Hi SBriggs
Can't you just set the "Email From Name" in the ECT Admin -> Main Settings page? If you set it there in plain text it should be set properly.

That is already set but not coming through on test mailing list messages. It is fine for normal order notifications.

On mailing list tests, it just shows the actual e-mail address and is not picking up the friendly name.

We're using the standard PHP mail() function.

Thanks.

Hi SBriggs
I had a look here and I think I see the problem which is causing the Mailing List to drop the "From" name. What I've done to fix it is to add the possibility to the mailing list to override the "From" name in the same way that you can set a different email address. I've added the changes to the v7.8 updater for now so are you able to update to that version? The other changes that v7.7 doesn't have give the ability to mix video and image files for products.

Hi Vince,
I'd be reluctant to go right up to 7.8 while that is still in 'advance' status, tbh.
It is no longer urgent for me as I gave up and switched to Mailchimp instead (sorry, but I had to get it all sorted urgently).
I did have some problems with the mailing list sync into Mailchimp but I'll put in a separate post about that.
Thanks for looking at it. Always much appreciated.
Steve.
