We're having an issue where a free shipping product (item A) is added to the cart with another product (item B) that does not apply for free shipping. The customer upgrades to expedited shipping as they are able to do so because of the second item and is only charged for expedited shipping on the second product (item B) and item A gets shipped expedited at no charge to the customer. Unfortunately we are billed for both items from the carrier. I thought that with this discount set-up the free shipping products are not allowed to expedite their shipping.

We have a free standard shipping discount that applies storewide as we want to offer free shipping on our higher cost items. For items that don't apply are free shipping exempt so shipping is charged on them.

Store: https://www.mettlerelectronics.com/categories.php

thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian

From what I understand you have FSA (free shipping applies) for the expedited shipping method and it sounds like you need to uncheck that so it only applies to regular shipping.

Hi Andy,

Under shipping methods > FedEx I only have FSA checked for shipping methods: FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but are you saying the customer can get free shipping on methods that are not Ground or Home?

No, free shipping only applies to ground or home AND only on certain products. However when you pair one of the free shipping products with a non free shipping products, one product does not get calculated in the shipping cost when it's expedited and both products should be calculated.

EX:
If you add a unit to your cart these have free standard shipping and cannot be expedited (https://www.mettlerelectronics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ME740)
Then add an accessory, these should be charged shipping (https://www.mettlerelectronics.com/proddetail.php?prod=110)

When the customer selects expedited shipping the unit product does not get charged as it has free shipping but should be charged if it is expedited.

Can you send me an email with your control panel details so I can check your settings and do some testing here?

It seems you have the product ME740 set as shipping exempt and that is why it can qualify for free shipping and any method if it is with another product. I would remove that attribute from the product. I would also set up the free shipping discount so that it becomes available at a certain price point eg

Min Purchase Amount: $200
Min Quantity: 1

The site shows as 7.0.2 but your cart page actually looks older than that - I think you need to upload the latest ectcart.css file to /wp-content/themes/mettler/css/

Hi Andy,

What would be the best way to set-up free standard shipping on certain products only (typically higher priced units)? Also this can't be applied to expedited shipping.

When we first set this up years ago it was based on the feedback I received from the support forum on how to do so.

1. Set-up the site to have free standard shipping
2. Go to the products that don't qualify for free standard shipping and select 'free shipping exempt'

thanks,
Brian

I would do it how I suggested above.

Add a minimum purchase amount in the discount admin page. Mark those products you don't want free shipping on as Free Shipping Exempt. Don't mark any products as Shipping Exempt.

Let us know how that goes.

If I set it up the way you suggest, what happens if they select expedited shipping? Will a shipping charge then kick in?

Yes, they would pay for expedited shipping as you have fsa checked for Ground and Home Delivery only.

Andy,

If I use a minimum purchase amount then the free shipping would apply to the whole purchase and not just the item I want to give free shipping to, correct?

EX: If they purchase a 740 and combine with an accessory they would get free shipping. We just want to offer free shipping on the units (740) not the other products.

I've been messing with this for 2 days now and basically, you can't offer free shipping.

Better to discount your price and charge shipping.

In my case, like you, I want to mark just a few items as free shipping for US delivery only, via USPS. Absolutely nothing works as you would expect.
Setting the Free Shipping discount to a minimum dollar amount is ignored.
Setting the Free Shipping discount to Restrict to certain countries does not work, even when the US is the only country in the list set to FSA
Setting the shipping to force UPS for international, rather than USPS, does nothing. Free shipping still listed to international destinations, with UPS as the carrier
Setting all other items in the cart (seemed like 4000 when I did it) to Free Shipping Exempt works for those items, does nothing to help the cause.
Setting the items I want free shipping on to either Shipping Exempt or leaving that field blank, does nothing.

Did you get your problem solved?

Thanks.
Brett

Hi Brett

Free shipping is a store wide discount and the set up details are here https://www.ecommercetemplates.com/help/shipping.asp#free

You can make individual products free shipping exempt in the product admin page.

Hi Brett,

I did get it resolved per Andy's suggestion in this post by using a minimum purchase.

Thanks Andy.

I followed the instructions that you link to, days ago.
It doesn't work very well at all. It's as buggy as all hell.

For example, I want the minimum order to be $29.90 for free shipping. I have that "discount" set at a minimum of $29.89 and yet it gives free shipping to a $14.95 purchase.

Then there's the setting for "Restrict to certain countries", which is also ignored.

Setting only USPS for domestic and only UPS for international, then telling it only USPS is FSA, is also ignored. At this point, to get anywhere, I've had to disable all international shipping options.

Thanks.
Brett

It's not buggy at all and really works fine. It sounds more like fsa hasn't been checked for the countries or shipping methods it should apply to. That is assuming the free shipping discount is correctly set in the admin discounts page.

Yeah, you'd think so, right, lol.

FSA is checked for USA, no other country
FSA is checked for USPS First Class (items are light enough to qualify)

I can't seem to work out how to upload an image to this forum to show you the discount settings.

Thanks.

Threw it up on my site instead.

The parts are $14.95 each (http://www.bmw-stuff.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DRPE30) and the deal is free shipping if you buy 2.

If you add one to the cart, for a total of $14.95, it still shows free shipping.

Thanks.
