There is a category suggested on certain products that are not found. I believe this is happening on the prod detail page.
An old url is visited, the page says “sorry that product isn’t found” and “Please click here for similar products in this category” and displays a category image that the non existing product would have been in. It doesn’t happen for every product not found.

I’d like to replicate that behavior but I need to know how it’s occurring and cannot find php parameters that control it or information on the feature.

Is anyone able to point me in the right direction?

I don't think there is a parameter for that. When it was introduced, it just said:

If a product has been taken off-line the product detail page will correctly give an HTML 404 response so that search engines know to remove the product detail from their indexes. However now a link will also be given to the old product's category so that the customer can search for similar products.[/quote]

For the ones that aren't showing, maybe you have deleted that item from the catalog, then it wouldn't have anything to reference.
